Industry 4.0 technologies and their applications - IOT, AI.

Industry 4.0 signifies the integration of modern technologies in the traditional industries to optimize the process, work, operations, product, and people.

Some of the major technologies in the Industry 4.0 revolution are:

1. IoT (Internet of Things)

2. AI (Artificial Intelligence)

3. Additive Manufacturing – 3D Printing

4. Autonomous Robots – Robotic Process Automation

We will discuss each technology and its applications:

1. IoT (Internet of Things)

It is basically the connection between physical objects/machines and the Internet. The machines are connected to the internet with the help of sensors, cloud, and the data is transferred to the connected mobile/software. Some of the benefits of IoT are:

1. Access to Real-time data that can be shared with all the stakeholders.

2. Transparency and visibility of shop-floor activity increases.

3. Improves decision-making as real-time data generated reports are available.

4. Predictive maintenance and better efficiency.

2. AI (Artificial Intelligence)

AI is used to create intelligent computers and machines that act like humans. AI algorithms are developed to make calculated and real-time data-analyzed decisions. Some of the benefits/applications of AI are:

3. Analysed Forecasting results help in reducing uncertainties and costs.

Additive Manufacturing is also known as 3D printing as the product is manufactured layer by layer by machine and the operator just has to upload the design file of the product on the system. It is mainly used for the customization and prototyping of products. Some of the benefits/applications of additive manufacturing are:

1. Shortens the supply chain as a direct digital design file is used for reference.

2. Customer experience improves because of customization.

3. Huge costs can be reduced in the prototyping stage.

4. Produces less waste and introduces digitalization.

4. Autonomous Robots – Robotic Process Automation:

Autonomous robots play an important role in the production/manufacturing process as it increases the automation connected with computers and algorithms. Some of the benefits/applications are:

1. Robots can be used in huge warehouses for operations and logistics.

2. Integration of robots reduces the uncertainties that are associated with human intervention.

3. It reduces a lot of manual work and increases automation in the processes.

4. It improves efficiency and productivity in operations.
